Lyudmila German (USA) was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, in 1974. Prior to her move to the US, she studied piano and music theory. She continued her education in New York, where she earned a BA in music from Brooklyn College, 1996 (composition studies with Noah Creshevsky and Tania Leon), and MM and DMA degrees in composition from the Manhattan School of Music, 2003 (studies with Ursula Mamlok and Nils Vigeland). Lyudmila is a recipient of Miriam Gideon Scholarship from Brooklyn College, Meet the Composer Grant, Ivar Mikhaschoff Grant for New Music, and Cantate Chamber Singers award.
Past performances include: solo recital of chamber music at Manhattan School of Music, NYC (2001); A Thaw in the Forest—a commission from TimeTable Percussion ensemble, at Washington Square Church, NYC (2001); Lux Aeterna for 5 male voices—by COSMOS vocal ensemble, at Young Composers Workshop in Dundaga, Latvia (2004); 4 chamber works at Yamaha Studio, NYC, (2006); Pound Ridge, NY (for electronics), at The New School’s Sonic Channels festival, NYC (2006); A Clear Midnight for mixed choir a capella—by Pharos Project, at St. Bartholomew Church, NYC (2006); Lux Aeterna for mixed choir a capella—by C4 vocal ensemble at Norwegian Seamen’s Church, NY (2007), Dialogues for piano and electronics at Yamaha Hall, NYC (2007), Gone for tenor saxophone and electronics at Yamaha Hall, Nagoya, Japan (2007).
Upcoming performances include: Reflections on Time and Being, for clarinet, viola, and piano by Juventas Music Ensemble, Boston MA, December 2008; clarinet and cello duo (title TBA), at Tenri Cultural Institute, NYC, January 2009, and at Fenway Hall, Boston, MA, February 2009.
Lyudmila published three theoretical articles on symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich as well as miscellaneous Russian-English translations at DSCH Journal. She was one of the speakers at UK Shostakovich Society Conference, dedicated to the centenary of the composer’s birth, in September of 2006.
Currently, Lyudmila is a theory faculty member at Long Island Conservatory, NY, a music director at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Georgetown, CT, and a full-time mother. Previously, she was a part time faculty at York College, City University of NY, where she worked as a choral accompanist, church music director in Brooklyn, NY, and a private teacher. Lyudmila now lives in Stamford, CT. |
